Learn moreMore canals than anywhere, and storms that test every lift
Cape Coral has more navigable canals than any city on earth, and the harbors, rivers and bays from Bonita Springs to Englewood are lined with docks. Salt water, daily sun, summer lightning and hurricane season all work on the same steel, cable and wiring. After Ian, thousands of lifts were rebuilt or replaced, and many of the ones that survived have been running hard ever since.
Miles of canals in Cape Coral alone, more than any other city in the world, and a huge share of those lots have a dock and a lift.

Source: Permit Place, Charlotte County permit guideThe lifts we see most
Most residential lifts in Lee and Charlotte counties are one of three kinds. Elevator lifts mount to the seawall and raise the boat on a carriage that rides up and down a track. Four-post lifts stand on pilings in the water, with motors on the top beams turning shafts that wind stainless cables. Two-post and boathouse lifts hang the boat from beams between pilings or from a roof structure. Personal watercraft lifts and floating PWC docks round out the list.
Each kind fails in its own way. Elevator lifts wear rollers, tracks and the long cable or chain that runs the carriage. Four-post lifts wear pulleys, cables and the gearboxes that turn the winder shafts. All of them share the weak spots that salt air finds first: motor covers, switch boxes, remote receivers and the wiring that runs down the dock.
Five things worth checking
- Is the breaker on, and does the GFCI at the dock reset?
- Does the motor hum, click, or make no sound at all?
- Are any cable strands broken, kinked or rusted where they wrap the shaft?
- Does one side of the lift rise slower than the other?
- Is there water, rust or a burnt smell inside the motor or switch box?
Write down what you find. It tells the technician which parts to bring, and it often turns a two-trip job into a one-trip job. If the boat is up and a cable looks bad, leave it up and don’t run the lift until it has been checked.
Three steps to a working lift
Tell us what it’s doing
Call or send the short form: your town, the kind of lift, the boat size and what happens when you press the switch.
Meet a local tech
We pass your details to one independent, licensed technician who works your part of Lee or Charlotte County. They inspect the lift on the dock.
Decide with a written price
You get the diagnosis and a written price to repair, or to replace if that makes more sense. You’re never obligated to hire.
When a repair makes sense
Most lift problems are parts problems. A capacitor, a switch, a limit switch, a cable set, a pulley or a gearbox can be replaced on a lift whose beams, cradle and pilings are still sound, and the lift goes back to work. That’s the case for the majority of calls.
Replacement starts to make sense when the structure itself is failing: beams that are bent or badly pitted, a cradle that has cracked, pilings that have rotted or shifted, or a lift that was never big enough for the boat you own now. A lift that keeps eating motors or cables is often telling you something about its alignment or capacity. In those cases, ask for a repair price and a replacement price in writing and compare them side by side.
What lift work costs
Repairs and replacements are priced very differently. HomeAdvisor puts most boat lift repairs at about $175 to $500, while a new lift averages about $8,000 according to Angi figures cited by Boatzon, with most between $2,000 and $20,000 depending on type and capacity. The gap is why a proper diagnosis comes first: plenty of lifts that seem dead only need a capacitor, a switch or a cable.
Reference figures, not quotes. HomeAdvisor, boat dock repair cost: boat lift repairs about $175–$500, around $340 on average. Boatzon, boat lift cost in 2026: citing Angi, a new boat lift averages about $8,000, with most between $2,000 and $20,000. Checked November 2026.

Who permits a new lift
Repairs to an existing lift rarely need a permit. Installing a new or replacement lift usually does, and new wiring to the dock is electrical work that gets inspected. Which office handles it depends on the parcel, not the mailing address: Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Bonita Springs, Estero and Punta Gorda run their own building offices, the rest of Lee goes to Lee County, and the rest of Charlotte goes to Charlotte County.
Your contractor should pull the permit in their name and include it in the price.

Frequently asked questions
Are you a marine contractor?
No. Boat Lift Repair SWFL is a referral service. We connect you with an independent, licensed local lift technician or marine contractor, who gives their own estimate, handles any permit and does the work.
My lift motor hums but won't turn. What's wrong?
A humming motor that won't turn usually points to a failed start capacitor, a seized gearbox, a bad switch or a motor that has burned out. A technician can test each one on the dock in a single visit.
Should I repair or replace my boat lift?
Motors, switches, cables and pulleys are usually worth replacing on a sound lift. When the beams, cradle or pilings are badly corroded or bent, or the lift is too small for your boat, replacement is often the better buy. Ask for both prices in writing.
What does boat lift repair cost?
HomeAdvisor puts most boat lift repairs at about $175 to $500. Motors, gearboxes and full cable sets cost more, and a new lift averages about $8,000 according to Angi figures cited by Boatzon.
